During the Napoleonic Wars of 1812, Campredon, General and Engineer of the French Army, and Major von Marckoff, Engineer of the Prussian Army, designed and began the construction of fortifications in the northern part of Klaipėda. As the works were completed, the northern part of Klaipėda City was surrounded by a defence system consisting of six defensive embankments. At the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the above-mentioned complex of fortifications collapsed, only the remains of one defensive embankment remained at the entrances to Klaipėda Sculpture Park (former city cemetery).
