Ferryman's House

Koordinatės: 55.70697, 21.127369
Objekto adresas: Žvejų Street 20, Klaipeda, Lithuania
Savivaldybė: Klaipeda

The Ferryman's House had been indicated on the plan of Klaipėda Castle in the 17th c. It was the home of the ferryman and also the so-called Log Service (for collecting fees for using the ferry). Later, the Ferryman's House was expanded into a larger one-storey building with an attic. The building was as if a twin of the Rice Mill, located on the other side of the channel, featuring the same timber framing style and façade colours. In the early 19th c., it was rebuilt into a luxurious classical building, featuring various wings and stairways.
After the war, the building was given to the Pilot Ship Repair Company. It hosted offices of some of the administration divisions, also various companies, a nursery, a kindergarten and a trade school.
The Ferryman's House is characterised by its eclectic architecture, featuring a classic façade on Žvejų Street side and timber framing elements on the river side. Architects have recreated the shapes of the former Ferryman's House based on the remaining early 20th c. photographs and after restoration the building has reborn in its authentic image. Adjustments included the façade elements, added during the Soviet era, and building a 100 m2 terrace for an outdoor cafeteria. The restorers also preserved the century-old wooden constructions, as well as the authentic cellar.
In January of 2008, the Ferryman's House, located on the Danė River quay, near the old bridge, opened its door, inviting Klaipėda citizens and guests into the 1100 m2 Old Mill Conference hotel and restaurant, featuring a banquet hall and a conference centre.
The history of the building is reflected on the nearby monuments of cultural heritage – the restored turning bridge and the unique ghost sculpture. There is also a restored Rice Mill, which currently hosts the Old Mill Hotel.

The object is marked maritime heritage brand. This mark includes objects related to the sea heritage – buildings and places of former buildings, quays, trails, ships and others. The aim is to emphasize the distinctive nature of Klaipeda as a maritime city. At the same time, the face of Lithuania as a maritime state is also highlighted.
