The growing city and increasing traffic made it necessary to build bypasses and new bridges over Dangė river. Mokyklos Street bridge, one of the 6 bridges over Dangė river in Klaipėda city does namely that. The planning to build a bridge began as far as before the war.
On 10 September 1937 Vakarai newspaper featured an article on “Plans to Build a Large Trunk-Street”. It said that the “large street around the entire city will connect to all major city streets. The trunk-street should start along Šlėvys Street in front of the Customs warehouse, pass through Montė Street, then along the road, which previously served as a railway line to the port, then past the railway station, the city cemetery, Liverma Textile Factory, over the river, past Joniškės Textile Factory, across Tilžės Street, past the Jewish cemetery and join Smeltė Street near Smeltė Pharmacy.
According to plan, the new street was supposed to bypass the Old Town, Connecting the port, the railway station and the Lithuanian Exports.
“It will be necessary to build a bridge over Dangė. Moreover, Biržos Bridge is very old-fashioned, requires constant reparations and is very inconvenient for larger ships.” wrote Vakarai.
Nevertheless, the constructions began only in the soviet times, completed already after Lithuania regained its independence. Mokyklos Street Bridge is 510, making it the longest bridge over Dangė river.
