In Klaipėda 1941 inhabited population of about 41188. At the end of January 1945 Russians, after having captured the city found here only six people: two elder women – the Prussian Lithuanians,two Belorussiansprisoners of war and two Polish architects, who were brought here for work. About 40 thousand Klaipedians moved to the depth of Germany yet at the end of 1944 while dozens of civilians along with the German army troops retreated across the Curonian Spit (Klaipėda. Istorija populiariai: Klaipėdos miesto savivaldybės kultūros skyrius, 2002, p. 31).

In the summer of 2002 at the city railway station there was unveiled a sculpture „Farewell to Motherland“, remaining of the tragic fate of these people. Authors – married couple L. ir R. Janišovskiai (Janischowski), and the work itself – the gift of fellow-countrymen to the native city on the occasion of anniversary. The idea of sculpture was born after seeing a similar piece in one German city. (According to the article of A. Juškienė, ”Klaipėda”, 2002.06.30, p.3).
