In the first half of 17th century Klaipėda was surrounded by ramparts. Two districts, surrounded by defensive ramparts, were built: Senamiestis (Old Town) and Odų (Leather). They were separated by the watercourse of the Old Danė, which has flown in the current place of Didžiosios Vandens street.   

In 1693 Odų district (there representatives of „dirty“ professions: curriers, bath workers lived…) was granted the privilege, it was named Friedrich city. Although this „city“ had its emblem and flag, it did not receive equal legal rights as the Old Town. In 1722 Friedrich city was connected to the Old Town. (Senoji Klaipėda, p. 44).   

The accent of emblem-coat of arms of Friedrich city sculpture „The wild man“ has become a road link to Friedrich‘s Courtyard – to the closed side-street of cafes, restaurants. Creator of nearly three meters high sculptural composition – Svajūnas Jurkus. The wild man, whose head is decorated by a crown made of leaves from an Oak tree, leaning against the anchor, as if relates past and present, i.e. nowadays purpose of the side-street, and the plaques, existent on a pedestal make passerby to smile… The works were financed by the pasage owners.
