On July 6th, 2010, a commemorative plaque was placed on the wall of the building at 13 J. Karoso st. The plaque is dedicated to a civil activist and journalist of Lithuania Minor and the fosterer of Lithuanianism – Jonas Vanagaitis. He himself has constructed the building, upon which the commemoration was placed (present day Klaipėda Children’s Hospital).
J. Vanagaitis was born on August 23rd, 1869, in Padupiai, Ragainė district. He studied the art of typewriting in the Martynas Jankus Bitėnas printing house. Between 1904 and 1905, during the revolutionary movement in Lithuania, Vanagaitis started smuggling proclamations and weapons through the Lithuanian border. In 1905, he was a member of the Great Seimas of Vilnius, serving as a representative of Lithuania Minor. Vanagaitis signed the Act of Tilsit on November 30th, 1918 along with his congenials.
Jonas Vanagaitis died in 1946, in the Kassel-Mattenberg (Germany) Displaced Persons Camp. On August 19th, 2009, he was reburied along with his wife Marija Brožaitytė-Vanagaitienė in the Bitėnai cemetery.
